The Club
Poulton-le-Fylde

A Brief History...
In the late 1890’s a number of local business men travelled daily to Manchester on what was known as the “Club train”. They wanted to extend the sociability of this journey so along with other Poulton residents they met in the Masonic Hall on the 15 February 1901 and agreed to form “The Club”.
It was arranged that a Mr Dobson would build some premises on Tithebarn Street and they would rent it for £26 per annum. By 1908 this had become successful and a plot of land on Elletson Street was acquired, on which a purpose built building would be erected. This included a billiards room, reading room, bar lounge and a flat to be occupied by the steward. The cost of this was £717 and the official opening was on 22nd October 1909.
Over the years the external outline of the premises remains unchanged, but internal alterations have taken place with the bowling green being sold in May 1993, and is now known as The Lanterns. The last major alterations occurred in 1997 with the bar being refurbished in 2012.
During its 116 years many prominent Poultonians have been members, including Sir Harold Grime (Blackpool Gazette) Alderman J.R Hull, T D Whittingham (Headmaster of Baines), H Henthone (Builders Merchant), F Knagg (Insurance Broker), and there are still members current or retired persons with business interests in the town.
